Rep. Bernard Benson Meets Public Works Minister Over Relocation Allowance for Affected Communities

A meeting was held yesterday between Hon. Bernard Blue Benson Jr. and the Minister of Public Works regarding the long-discussed US$1 million relocation allowance intended for residents of the Conference Center and Hotel Africa communities.

According to statements following the meeting, discussions focused on the concerns of families affected by ongoing development plans in the area and the need to ensure that residents are treated fairly throughout the relocation process.

Hon. Benson said the issue goes beyond relocation and centers on justice, fairness, and the protection of the rights and livelihoods of ordinary Liberians.

“For too long, our people have carried the burden of uncertainty while development discussions continued around them,” Benson stated, adding that affected citizens deserve to have their concerns heard and addressed.

He also emphasized that no public disclosure on the details of the discussions would be made until direct engagement takes place with the affected communities.

“Before making any public disclosure on the details, I believe it is only right and respectful to first engage directly with the affected communities and citizens. Leadership must always begin with the people,” Benson said.

The meeting is being viewed by community members as a step toward greater accountability, inclusion, and community participation in decisions affecting their future.

Residents of the Conference Center and Hotel Africa communities have for years expressed concerns over uncertainty surrounding relocation and compensation arrangements tied to development activities in the area.
