Montserrado County District #17 Representative, Bernard Blue Benson Jr., has called on members of the media and broadcasting community in Liberia to exercise greater responsibility and professionalism in reporting on the country’s ongoing border issues.
‎In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the lawmaker emphasized the importance of accuracy and verification in journalism, particularly at a time when national matters require clarity and unity. He urged blogs and media institutions to prioritize verified facts over speculation, warning against the dangers of spreading unconfirmed information.
‎Rep. Benson cautioned that the current situation is not one for sensational headlines driven by the pursuit of online engagement such as followers, likes, and comments. Instead, he encouraged journalists to adopt eyewitness reporting as the most credible and reliable approach to informing the public.
‎Highlighting concerns over misinformation, the District 17 Representative further advised media outlets to refrain from disseminating secondhand or “they say” information, noting that such practices undermine public trust and can escalate tensions.
