Rep. Bernard Benson Jr. Raises Alarm Over Reported Guinean Military Presence in Lofa County

Montserrado County Electoral District 17 Representative Bernard Blue Benson Jr. has raised concerns in the Liberian House of Representatives regarding what he described as the alleged movement of Guinean military forces into parts of Lofa County along the Liberia–Guinea border.
Speaking during today’s sitting, Rep. Benson informed the Plenary that reports from residents and local authorities suggest that armed individuals believed to be members of the Guinean military have entered sections of Liberian territory. According to him, the reported presence has caused growing concern among residents in nearby communities who fear the situation could create tension between the two neighboring countries.
In response to the reports, the District 17 lawmaker formally requested that the House Plenary invoke an “Unwillingness Vote” to allow the matter to be urgently discussed during the body’s 18th Day Sitting. The request, he said, is aimed at ensuring lawmakers promptly address the issue and determine the appropriate legislative or diplomatic actions.
Rep. Benson stressed that Liberia’s territorial integrity must be protected at all times, noting that the presence of any foreign military force within the country’s borders without authorization should be treated as a serious national concern.
He also called on the national government and relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the reports and engage the Guinean authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged incursion.
Additionally, the lawmaker emphasized the importance of protecting Liberian citizens living in border communities, urging swift action to prevent the situation from escalating into a broader diplomatic or security problem.
The communication is expected to generate discussion among members of the House as they consider possible steps to address the reported border issue and ensure the protection of Liberia’s sovereignty.
Meanwhile, the Plenary of the House of Representatives has agreed to take up the matter for discussion during today’s session.
